MAAFA, a Kiswahili word that means “great or horrific tragedy,” refers to the Transatlantic Slave Trade, also called the Middle Passage. MAAFA commemorations, which occur in New Orleans during the July 4th weekend, offer the community and opportunity to pause and honor the ancestors who perished as well as those who survived the horrifying journey and life of slavery.
